Donald Trump Rushed Off Stage During Assassination False Alarm

It’s a frightening moment. A candidate strains to peer out into another friendly crowd, shielding his eyes from the glare of lights, when suddenly there’s a commotion close to the stage. Someone shouts “he’s got a gun!” A security agent rushes on stage and the candidate is swept to safety quickly.

That happened to Donald Trump today, at a campaign rally in Nevada on Saturday. A man from the crowd named Austyn Crites was taken to a back room under armed guard, but later released. Apparently Crites raised a protest sign reading “Republicans Against Trump, when he was mobbed and roughed up. Then someone, for unknown reasons, shouted about the gun, triggering the reaction from security. But despite a thorough search, no gun was found at the scene. It appears to be a false alarm, and the incident may have simply been a misunderstanding.

Much to Trump’s credit, he returned to the stage after a few minutes, when it was clear there wasn’t a credible threat. However, the candidate lost no time turning the incident to his advantage, bashing Hillary Clinton for missing a campaign event of her own due to inclement weather.

This is a sobering event that demonstrates how vulnerable candidates and politicians, even Presidential hopefuls, are to possible violence. Despite the best efforts of security teams, sometimes a determined assassin gets through, as history has taught us.

It’s our sincere hope at Face Activities that the outcome of the 2016 Presidential Election is determined collectively by the American People, at the ballot box. Violence or threats of violence have no place in this or any election, at any time. The Trump campaign, and crowds at Trump events, have reputations for dealing with protesters at rallies harshly. This incident may be the harshest example of all.

Very Large Huntsman Spider Rescued in Australia

Very Large Hunstaman Spider Rescued in Australia

Charlotte the huntsman spider was rescued from a home in Australia. She’s huge, with a leg span well over 6 inches (for some strange reason she hasn’t been measured yet, though she was brought to the rescue in 2015.) This species of spider is known to grow quite large, and specimens with 6 inch leg spans are found often in kitchens throughout Australia. The largest specimen of a huntsman species was found in Laos, with a leg span of 12 inches!

The huntsman spiders do hunt their prey, typically insects, rather than catch prey in webs, living up to their name. One huntsman (not Charlotte) recently snagged a mouse, though, and there’s a great video of that at the end of the article we link to below. As for Charlotte, appropriately named after the famed spider in the literary classic “Charlotte’s Web,” she’s a gentle and unassuming creature. Her species isn’t poisonous, so there’s no danger if she did bite, but their bites can be very painful. Sadly many spiders like her are killed by phobic people, who refuse to tolerate them in their homes, but don’t bother to relocate them to safer environments, either. Spiders are important players in the local ecology, and can help keep the population of nuisance insects down.

Presdent Obama Stumps for Clinton; Defends Affordable Care Act

Today President Obama campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Miami—-his third trip in three weeks to campaign for the Democratic Nominee. Addressing the crowd, he took a moment to defend the Affordable Care Act, as Donald Trump, also in Florida, railed against the program.

The President stressed that the problem of mushrooming premiums could have been fixed if the Republican-controlled congress had been willing to work with him, rather than obstructing progress. The President also stressed that  the alternative to the Affordable Care Act for many Americans would have been not having any insurance coverage at all, which is not a positive situation. And The President pointed out that Republicans don’t have a plan with which to replace the ACA.
