Greta Van Susteren is out at MSNBC: a great loss

Greta Van Susteren is out at MSNBC: a great loss

Just 6 months ago liberal media icon Rachel Maddow, a star of MSNBC’s evening line-up, praised Greta Van Susteren enthusiastically, just a few days before the debut of her old friend’s MSNBC program.

Despite this whole-hearted endorsement by a network super star, Van Susteren’s show failed to thrive. This Thursday it was suddenly cancelled. The veteran journalist, who sports a law degree, and decades of experience on cable news (at both CNN and Fox) was pulled from the air abruptly, without even a chance to say goodbye to her TV audience.

It’s a sad day for television journalism. Van Susteren is a skilled professional with an effective, cogent interview style, which we need more of in this age of extreme partisanship and factional bickering. Greta tells it like it is, no matter who she’s dealing with—-liberal or conservative, policy wonk or partisan hack. And though she spent 14 years at Fox News, which isn’t known for it’s political neutrality, she’s far from a political ideologue. In fact, she doesn’t even identify as a conservative.

The center-right journalism she practiced at Fox was an honest attempt to elucidate the political and social trends of our times, with intelligence and insight that’s increasingly hard to fine these days, particularly on Fox News. But it should come as no surprise that the current climate is dominated by liberal anger, spurred on, often justly, by fears and concerns with President Donald Trump’s extreme, sometimes bizarre, behaviors and policies.

Her tenure, and dismissal, at MSNBC runs parallel to the drama surrounding Megyn Kelly at NBC News, who was also hired by the network after leaving Fox, and who has struggled with audience expectations and concerns over her interview choices, which included conspiracy theorist and right wing extremist Alex Jones.

Van Susteren had two main challenges. Just the fact that she hailed from Fox News, the network liberals love to hate, was enough to put off many MSNBC viewers, who typically lean at least a little to the left. In addition, and perhaps more problematic, her continued support of the late Roger Ailes, the former, embattled Fox News Chairman, during the height of his sexual harassment troubles, alienated many potential fans. Van Susteren eventually did apologize for her public support, but it was too little, too late.

Now Van Susteren is gone. MSNBC will be poorer, less diverse, less interesting, and weaker as a news gathering entity, for her loss.

AHCA is a Disaster

AHCA is a Disaster

After days of secret negotiations, despite the fact that congressional republicans had years during the Obama Administration to get their collective acts together, the AHCA bill was finally released for public scrutiny.

It’s an unmitigated disaster for millions of ordinary Americans: the worst fears, and the warnings of activists and democratic lawmakers alike, have been realized. The Bill is actually so bad that four GOP Senators are planning to vote against it, including high-profile Libertarian firebrand Dr. Rand Paul. And many more are undecided.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, over the course of 10 years the AHCA will cause 22 million Americans to lose their health insurance coverage, and it’s unlikely to lower premiums. In fact, there’s a good chance older Americans between the ages of 50 and 62 will see substantial increases in their health insurance premiums. Some medical doctors have even gone so far as to say the AHCA stands for the “Americans Hate Children Act.” Clearly the American People, in particular Trump voters, have been duped.

President Trump has stated in recent weeks that the bill is “mean.” In fact, it transcends mean. It’s homicidal. As it stands now, the bill is the worst fraud law-makers have perpetrated on the American People in generations. After promising to repeal and replace an imperfect healthcare system, the AFC, aka “Obamacare,” the new legislation fails to meet the needs of the American People. Tens of millions of Americans losing their health insurance coverage is simply unacceptable.

It’s imperative that American Citizens stand up to the GOP elite and against this outrage. Call your Senators and let them known that consider the new healthcare bill to be dangerous and unacceptable. Any delay can bide time for more GOP Senators to come on board in opposition.

U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Aspects of President’s Travel Ban

U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Aspects of President's Travel Ban

Despite several lower-court losses, President Trump has won a modest victory regarding his controversial travel ban. The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that parts of the executive order aren’t problematic.

If an individual from one of the six muslim-majority countries affected by the travel ban can demonstrate a close affiliation with a school or company then that individual is exempt, but the ban will apply to those who can’t demonstrate such ties. The court will here full arguments on the case when they return from recess.

The President’s travel ban makes civil right’s activists and humanists bristle with anger. In an age when man people from muslim majority countries face persecution, from ISIS, from war, and from the machinations of unstable governments, the travel ban is seen as unnecessary, ineffective, and cruel.
